A handover is useful when another person can operate the product without relying on the original developer’s memory. Review it before the final week of a project so missing access, documentation and recovery steps can be resolved while the team still has context.
Start with ownership
Confirm who controls the source repository, domain, deployment platform and third-party accounts. Document service names and responsible people. Store secrets in the agreed secret-management system, with access granted through the relevant service. A handover document should describe how to obtain access without containing passwords or API keys.
Walk through a release together
Ask a teammate to follow the setup instructions from a clean environment. Record required runtime versions, dependency installation, configuration variable names and how to run relevant checks. A working environment file example should contain placeholders rather than live credentials.
Follow the documented deployment steps into a test environment. Identify who approves a production release and what must be checked afterward. If deployment relies on a personal laptop or an undocumented manual command, make that dependency explicit and agree on how to remove it.
Practice recovery, not only backup creation
A backup file is useful only if the team knows what it contains and how to restore it. For the agreed recovery scope, rehearse restoration in a separate environment. Record the result and any dependencies such as object storage, scheduled jobs or external services. Agree which person owns the recovery decision.
| Area | Evidence to review |
|---|---|
| Access | Owner-controlled accounts and a responsibility list |
| Setup | A teammate can follow the documented steps |
| Release | A reviewed deployment and rollback procedure |
| Operations | Known alerts, recurring tasks and support contacts |
| Limits | A visible list of unresolved issues and deferred work |
Define what happens after handover
Separate the acceptance of agreed deliverables from future feature work. Clarify the support arrangement, how problems should be reported and which operating tasks remain with your team. Avoid an indefinite promise of maintenance without a corresponding scope.
The checklist should match the product. A small content site and a payment-processing application have different operational requirements. The goal is to expose responsibilities and missing information, then decide what must be completed before acceptance.
Use the release review checklist
Record an owner, evidence and a decision for the checks that apply to your project.
